Pick a balanced mix
Employers look for both what you can do and how you work. Aim for 6–10 skills that match the advert.
- Practical / technical skills. Specific, teachable abilities — software you use, machines you operate, a driver's licence, a language. Easy for an employer to verify, so be honest and precise.
- Soft skills. How you work with others — communication, teamwork, problem solving. Strongest when your experience bullets back them up, rather than listed on their own.
Getting your skills section right
- Match the advert. Read the job description and mirror the exact skill words it uses — this is what ATS software scans for.
- Only claim what is true. If it comes up in an interview, you should be able to prove it. Never pad the list.
- Show level where it helps. For key technical skills, a level (“advanced Excel”, “conversational Shona”) tells the employer more.
- Keep it relevant. Drop skills that have nothing to do with the role — a focused list reads stronger than a long one.
